Harry E. "Ed" Leveritt

Harry E. "Ed" Leveritt, 82, of Milan, Ohio, died Monday evening, April 1, 2013, surrounded by his family, in his home.

He was born March 26, 1931 in Miami, Florida to the late Harry O. and Lurline (Gattis) Leveritt and came to this area in 1960 from Cambridge, Ohio. Ed was a 1949 graduate of Hapeville High School, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict, and was a member and former elder of the Edison Memorial United Methodist Church. He was the former District Sales manager for Motorist Mutual from 1954 to 1958, was the former Treasurer of the Margaretta School District from 1968 to 1970, and was the Executive Director, for 5 counties, of the North Star Council of Governments from 1970 to 1980. He was a former employee of the Erie County Sheriff's office where he was influential in applying for Federal Grants for the county.

Ed taught night classes at Terra Technical College in law enforcement and was the former owner of the Milan Village Motel and Gift Shop from 1970 to 1980. Ed was a member of the Erie County Planning and Zoning Board and retired as the Erie County Engineer of the Water Treatment Plant in Huron, Ohio in 1994. He was a 50 year + member of Guernsey Lodge #66 F. & A.M., Cambridge, Ohio, and as a youth, its Order of Demolay, was a member of the Milan J.C.'s, the Milan Rotary Club, Milan American Legion Post #052, and Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ed was the former Chairman and Treasurer of the Milan Melon Festival from 1963 to 1974, was a former member of the Milan Board of Public Affairs, and served two terms (8 years) as a member, and former president, of the Milan Village Council under Mayor Glenn Rockwell. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, was a member of the Milan Rod and Gun Club, the I.A. B. Club in Sandusky, Ohio, and the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association. Ed enjoyed target shooting, spending time at Camp Perry with his son, and fishing. He also enjoyed carpentry and had built a home in Milan, traveling, and taking his family on annual vacations.

He is survived by his children, Leanne Leveritt-Afong and Matthew J. Afong of Waipahu, Hawaii, Pamela J. and David Elmlinger of Milan, Ohio, and Bradley K. and Pamela M. Leveritt of LaGrange, Kentucky, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his sister, Mary Frances Morgan of Newnan, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marylee (Stultz) Leveritt in 2006, and by his sister, Louise Moore.

Friends may call on Friday, April 5, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 8 :00 p.m., in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. ,in the Edison Memorial United Methodist Church, 10 East Church Street, Milan, Ohio. Rev. Barbara A. Stephens-Rich will officiate. Interment will be in Milan Cemetery.
