Verna Theresa (Smith) Ruggles, 76, of Norwalk, died early Friday morning, April 26, 2013 in the Bellevue Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 25, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. Verna graduated in 1954 from Townsend-Wakeman High School and was Salutatorian of her class, In 1955, she graduated from the Oberlin School of Commerce (Oberlin Business College) with an Executive Secretarial degree. Verna worked for two years at U.S. Steel in Lorain, Ohio in the Industrial Relations Department (Employment office), and later, she worked at the A.S.C. office in Huron County for 15 months. Verna was a member of the Congregational Community United Church of Christ, Monroeville, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, deaconess, served on the Christian Education Committee, Women's Fellowship, the Adult Fellowship, and the Flower Committee. She also was a 4-H leader, Farm Bureau member and past member of the Harvester's Farm Bureau Council.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Ruggles, whom she married June 8, 1957, three daughters: Ruth Garwood and Jim Garwood of Collins, Sue Ann Miller and her husband, Rob Miller of Bellevue, Sharon Ruggles of Norwalk, one son: Marc Ruggles and his wife, Betsy (Fries) Ruggles of Norwalk, grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Kenton Garwood and his fiance' Sara Majzun, Philip Garwood and his fiance' Jennifer Ryan, Neil Garwood, Laura Miller, Emily Miller, Amelia Ruggles, Nevan Ruggles, Anita Ruggles, Anessa Ruggles, Abecka Ruggles and Annaka Ruggles.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Frank & Laura (Ziemke) Smith, Jr., one brother: Norman F. Smith and one sister: Dorothy Smith.
Friends may call Monday, April 29, 2013 from 2:00 - 7:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville and on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 10:30 AM at the Congregational Community United Church of Christ, 29 Chapel Street, Monroeville, Ohio 44847. The Rev. Dr. Wayne Chasney will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Monroeville.
