John Douglas "Doug" Goostree, 89, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Sunday evening, May 12, 2013 in his home.
He was born March 12, 1924 in Portland, Tennessee to Clara and Glinness Goostree and was raised in the Church of God of Prophecy. From the day he was born he was called Doug. He arrived in Bucyrus, Ohio the same day Eunice, his future wife, arrived from Milan, Ohio. They met at a Veteran's Day Parade. Doug and Eunice married March 27, 1943, and recently celebrated their 70th Anniversary. They raised nine children: Gwen, Jim, Pat, Sherry, Mike, Connie, Deb, Teresa, and Pam, and put all of them through St. Paul Catholic Schools in Norwalk, Ohio. After 16 years of marriage, Doug converted to the Catholic Faith.
He served his country in Okinawa; and retired as a Staff Sergeant. He worked at various jobs; the Erie County Highway Department, A.J. Baltes road construction for 17 years, then Milan Steel for 17 years as a heavy equipment operator setting heavy machinery in factories for steel for bridges. He retired in 1984. Doug was a member of the International and Ohio Operating Engineers Local #18. After retiring, Doug and Eunice spent their winters in Lakeland, Florida at the Lazy Dazy Campground. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Knights of Columbus. He loved fishing, boating, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.
Doug is survived by his wife, Eunice, by 9 children, Gwendoline (Willard) Bores, James (Katherine) Goostree, Patricia (Thomas) Sprowl, Sheryl Laing,all of Norwalk, Ohio, Michael (Linda) Goostree of Cutler Ridge, Florida, Constance (Keith) Brunn of Norwalk, Ohio, Deborah (David) White of Wakeman, Ohio, Teresa ( Kenneth) Sauvey of Lorain, Ohio, and Pamela( Gary) Mason of Tiffin, Ohio, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doug is also survived by his brothers, Jack (Judy) Goostree and Larry (Trula) Goostree of Lakeland, Florida, by his sisters, Betty (Dan) Campbell of Portland, Tennessee, Dorothy (Nolen) Clement of Camden, Tennessee, Ruth Williams and Jeanette (Sy) Tangerstrom of White Bluff, Tennessee and by his sister in law, Virginia Goostree of Hendersonville, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents Glinness and Clara (Hardin) Goostree, sister, Nora (Evelyn) Iscman, by his brother, Gilford"Gip"Goostree, and 2 infant grandchildren, Marvin and Marie Bores.
Friends may call on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Frank Kehres will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
