Richard "Twigs" C. Weichel, 64, of Sandusky, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday evening, May 31, 2013 in Firelands Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born on March 31, 1949 in Sandusky to the late Willis F. and Della M. (Sarr) Weichel. Richard was a 1967 graduate of Sandusky High School. He apprenticed at the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field as an aeronautical engineer. He then worked for NASA Plum Brook, where he helped in the development of the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo space program. Richard then worked for New Departure until his retirement in 2001.
Richard loved fishing, camping, performance vehicles, the Cleveland Indians, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, AMVETS Post 17, and many other groups and fraternal clubs. His late wife, Susan, was everything to him.
Richard is survived by his brothers, Jim (Cheryl) Weichel, Bob (Debbie) Weichel, and Don (Cheryl) Weichel, all of Sandusky; nieces, Amy Krogh, of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, Jennifer Weichel, of Sandusky, Becky Sahadi, of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Carolyn and Stephanie Weichel, both of Columbus, Ohio; nephew, Steven Weichel, of Columbus, Ohio; and aunt, Elnora Ferrell, of Sandusky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susan L. Weichel, on September 13, 2008.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 9:30 A.M. until time of memorial services at 10:30 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Rev. John Mawhirter will officiate.
