Donald M. Sweet

Donald M. Sweet, 83, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Thursday, June 13, 2013 in the Stein Hospice Care Center.

He was born September 7, 1929 in Norwalk, Ohio to the late Myron R. and Ellen (O'Dell) Sweet and was a lifelong area resident. Don was a 1947 graduate of Norwalk High School where he earned 14 varsity letters, and where several school sporting records still stand. He was among the first group of inductees into the Norwalk High School Hall of Fame for Athletics, and attended Drake University from 1947 to 1948 where he lettered in Football and Basketball. Don was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving stateside during the Korean Conflict. He played fast pitch softball for the Norwalk Merchants team and also played on the Ohio Travel League Team. Don retired from Gould (Tenneco) in Milan, Ohio in 1987 with 25 years of service. He was a member of Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion, Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Aerie #711, Elks Lodge #2949, Moose Lodge #2188 Anna Maria Island, Florida, Amvets Post #1965, was a charter member of the Bronson Norwalk Conservation Club and was also a member of the Norwalk High School Athletic Boosters Club. Don enjoyed fishing, camping, and sports. Don enjoyed watching his children's, grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's sporting and school events.

He is survived by his children, Donald M. Sweet, Jr. and Bernie Mirtes of Norwalk, Ohio, Michael S. and Robin Sweet of Sandusky, Ohio, Terrie and Rich Meisler of Norwalk, Ohio, Donna and Mike Sutter of Norwalk, Ohio and Traci Thurman and Don Burkett of Norwalk, Ohio, 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and one soon to be born, by his sister, Betty Winslow, of Norwalk, Ohio, and by his brother Myron R. "Mike" Sweet of Monroeville, Ohio.

Don is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Ritchey) Sweet in 2004, by his great grandson, Parker Olcott, and by his brother and sister in law, Charles and Fern Sweet.

Friends may call on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio, beside his wife Beverly, with military graveside services conducted by Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion.
