Harold J. Hammersmith, 95, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Friday, June 21, 2013 in his home.

He was born June 30, 1917 in Groton Township, Huron County, Ohio to the late Edward William and Elizabeth Anna (Zimmerman) Hammersmith and was a lifelong area resident. Harold was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and former member of the parish council. He was a Bronson Township Trustee for 25 years, was a former member of the Rural Water Board, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Harold was a lifelong farmer, former owner of Southside Marathon, was a former employee of Ford Motor Company, and Jo and Ed's Carry Out. He enjoyed lawn work and gardening and anything else to stay busy.

Harold is survived by his wife of 71 years, Wilma J. (Didion) Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, by his children, Kathleen R. and Gerald Stoll of Sandusky, Ohio, Eugene H. and Nancy Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, Glenn A. and Vickie Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, Dale J. and Jean Hammersmith of New London, Ohio, Debra A. and Ted Ickes of Norwalk, Ohio, and Bruce A. and Janine Hammersmith of Bay View, Ohio, 24 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alfred, in infancy, Raymond, and Edward, and by his sisters, Marian Preston, Magdeline Adelman, and Anna Carabin.

Friends may call on Sunday, June 23m, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Settlement Road, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. William Pifher will officiate. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
