Green Williams, 91, of Sandusky, went home to live eternally with the Lord on Thursday morning, June 27, 2013 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born on March 23, 1922 in Demopolis, Alabama to the late Louisa (Johnson) and John Williams.
Green was the youngest boy of eight children. He grew up in Coatopa, Alabama and joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He served under General McArthur and General Patton in both the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II, and returned to Dunikan Bottom Laurel, Mississippi in 1946. There, he worked in his father's restaurant, later owning and managing the business. He also was employed at the Masonite Brickyard. He was baptized at an early age in C.M.E. Methodist Church in Kingston, Mississippi.
Following his childhood sweetheart, Amie Mae (Clinton), he came to Sandusky in 1956. He worked at Sandusky Lumber Company and Farrell-Cheek Steel Company. Upon the steel company's closing, he began working at Ohio Veterans Home, where he retired after five years.
Green became a member of the Porter's Memorial C.M.E. Church in 1958, and served in several positions. He was a faithful member. He received several honors, recognition, and accolades from the Sandusky community. On April 14, 2013, Green received an Honorary Certificate of Appreciation for dedication and service for the Steward Board, Kitchen Crew, and the Church.
Green leaves to cherish his memories four daughters, Gracie Mae (Peter) Brown and Doreen Harvey Everett, both of Sandusky, Dr. Rose Mary (Milton) Hoffman, of Solon, Ohio, and Sheila Lane, of Toledo, Ohio; six sons, Albert D. (Jeanetta), Thomas, John W. (Pam) Williams, and Raymond M. (Zelma) Williams, all of Sandusky, Kelvin L. (Lillie) Williams, of San Diego, California, and Van Williams and Vincent E. Williams, both of Sandusky; 39 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ceola Knighton, of Laurel, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Amie Mae; one son, Green Thomas; two sisters, Alice Dykes and Lucy (Hathorn) Hayes; four brothers, Price Williams, John Roberts Williams, Murray Williams, and Walter Williams; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends may call on Friday July 5, 2013 from 6-8 P.M. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Friends may also call on Saturday from 12-1 P.M. at Porter's Memorial C.M.E. Church, 1722 3rd St., Sandusky. Funeral services will start at 1 P.M. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, with the Marine Corps Forever Honor and Color Guard providing military honors.
