John Weske

John Weske, 90, of Sandusky died Wednesday morning, July 3, 2013, at home after a lengthy illness. John was a native Sanduskian who worked as a barber on Cleveland Road for over 50 years.

John was born on January 20, 1923 to Joseph and Frieda (Wickler) Weske.

John served in the Army during WWII. He enlisted at 18 years of age, serving in the infantry. John was a first replacement during the D-Day Invasion on Omaha Beach. Assigned to Company B, 175th Infantry Regiment, 29thDivision which experienced a 50% combat loss. He was decorated with 4 Bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. John was honorably discharged after the end of the war, having achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant. He then returned to Sandusky to start a family and build a thriving customer base as a barber. He was a proud Sanduskian who enjoyed boating. He was a member of the Sandusky AMVETS Post 17, Sandusky American Legion 83, and Sandusky VFW Post 2529.

John is survived by his daughter, Jan (Gil) Weske Bucholz; daughter-in-law, Bettye Weske; three grandchildren, Jennifer Weske Monroe, John C.(Regina) Weske and Ashley Bevell; eight great-grandchildren and niece Gale (Joe) Bilgen and their children .

John was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; Parents, Joseph and Frieda Weske; son, John T. Weske; brother, Joseph Weske and sister-in-law, Renee.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Stein Hospice 1200 Sycamore Line Sandusky, OH. "Marines Forever Honor Guard and Color Guard providing military honors" The Reverend Webster Maughan will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky, OH.
