Clyde D. Nugent, 86, of Sandusky passed away early Tuesday morning, July 2, 2013, at Firelands Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Clyde was born November 30, 1926, in Elyria, Ohio to the late Clyde Charles and Wilma Jane (Wilcox) Nugent.
Clyde proudly served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer from 1944-1966. He was part of the Underwater Demolition Team "UDT", which was a pre-curser to the Navy Seals, and was stationed on the USS Forrestal. He was an Instructor of demolition at Indian Head, Maryland, Naval Ordinance Center. Clyde was employed by both NASA and Columbia Gas for over ten years, retiring from NASA in 1974, and Columbia Gas in 1985 before working for Sandusky City Schools for a short time.
Clyde was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Eagles, and Erie County Conservation League. Clyde enjoyed fishing, golfing, loved spending time with his dog Sadie, and attending the annual USS Forrestal Reunion.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia (Browne) Nugent; daughter, Patricia (William) Mattingly; three step-children, Bartt (Jill) Carruthers, Hallie (Marvin) Wade, and Carrie (Terry) Wade; seven grandchildren, Tiffani (Dr. Peter) Johnston, Miles, Colleen, Michael Mattingly, Joseph Wise, Justin, and Katie Smith; three great-grandchildren, Judson Mattingly, Mattingly Jane and Chandler Johnston; God-daughter, Alexis Carruthers; nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Including his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela (Nugent) Smith in 2004.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
Memorial Contributions in Clyde's name may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Burial will be held at LaGrange Cemetery.
