Dr. Jeffrey K. Wagner

Dr. Jeffrey K. Wagner, 61, residing in Huron, passed away Monday afternoon, July 8, 2013 at Stein Hospice Care Center after a short battle with brain cancer.

Jeff was born on March 11, 1952 in Bellwood, PA to Harold E. and the late BettyJane (Holsinger) Wagner.

Jeff graduated from Bellwood Antis High School, received his BS in Astronomy from Penn State University in 1974, and his PhD in Geology and Planetary Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. He spent one year at the Talcott Mountain Science Center in Avon, CT as an Earth Sciences Instructor, and retired in 2011 from Firelands College where he enjoyed 30 years as a Professor of Astronomy and Geology. He was the author of the book, Introduction to the Solar System, which was published in 1991 and often used in the classroom by his students. He served as chair of the Department of Natural and Social Sciences at BGSU Firelands for nine years, helping to grow and advance that department. In 2007, his work in the classroom was recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award. Jeff was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Sandusky participating as a choir member and teaching the Heritage Sunday School for over 19 years. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, train-watching and photography, stargazing using his telescope, and going to the theater.

Jeffrey is survived by his wife, Barbara (Neville) Wagner of 29 years; son, David Wagner; brother, Jerry (Irene) Wagner; aunt, Jean (Lloyd) Noland; niece, Emilee Wagner; and nephew, Sean Wagner.

Jeff is preceded in death by his mother, BettyJane (Holsinger) Wagner.

Friends may call on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Friends may also call from 10:00 AM until time of funeral services at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 12, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1810 E. Perkins Ave, Sandusky with Pastor David Hixson presiding. Burial will take place at a later date in Logan Valley Cemetery, in Bellwood, PA.
