Nathanial Sanford Smith, 56, left us on Thursday afternoon, July 11, 2013 with his family by his side at Concord Care Center of Sandusky.
He was born on June 14, 1957 in Sandusky to Harold Dee Smith and Naomi (Smith) Mickens.
Nathanial is survived by his children, Enid A. Terrell, Amanda M. Smith, and Hailee A. Smith; grandchildren, De'Ajané, Kyhairé, Jailen; former wife, Vera Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi; father, Harold; and sister, Marianne Goodwin.
Nathanial was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Sandusky. He spent his childhood growing up on the south side of Sandusky, where he built lifelong friendships and enjoyed spending time with his family. His family includes 15 brothers and sisters, Ezell Smith, Betty Simmons, Irma Smith, Marianne Goodwin, Harold Dee Smith, Naomi Tyler, Jake Smith, Jackie Smith, and Frances Copland; and 6 half brothers and sisters.
Following his graduation from Sandusky High School, he went on to serve in the United States Army, where he received a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Safety Council, for his personal efforts to reduce deaths, injury, and damage due to traffic accidents in the United States. He was honorably discharged on August 1, 1977. After his time in the Armed Forces, Nathanial went on to become a state-certified welder, and he obtained a certificate in Road Surface Management for local government from The Ohio State University Department of Civil Engineering. He was employed by the Erie County Highway Department.
