Gladys Virginia Stump Abbey, 83, longtime resident of Collins, Ohio, died August 8, 2013 in Gaymont Nursing Center, after suffering a severe stroke earlier in the week.
She was born February 6, 1930 in Grantsville, West Virginia. Gladys was well-known for her love of horses. Her pride and joy where her 2 quarter horses, Risco’s Miss Abbey and Risco’s Rita. Both of whom she showed competitively and won numerous trophies and ribbons. She also had two memorable canine companions, Nora Jean and Ellie Mae, all of whom lived on her “All Girl Farm” located on DeRussy Road in Collins. Her hobbies included horses, bowling, and volunteer work at the Huron County Humane Society and Huron/Erie County 4-H. She belonged to the AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) and was a member of the American Ladies Auxiliary of Norwalk, Ohio. Gladys had owned her own beauty shop, and the Olena Country Store with her ex-husband. She was a former employee of Gaymont and Twilight Gardens nursing centers and was home health certified through Hospice.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, John Sherman and Cora Jane Deams Stump, and 10 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Friday, August 16, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Collins Cemetery.
