Samuel (Sam) D. Hartzell, 68, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Sunday, September 1, 2013, at his home after a lengthy and hard fought battle with cancer. A long time educator, community member, and overall loving man, he will be truly missed by many.
Sam was born February 17, 1945, at home, in Adamsville, Pennsylvania, to the late Aaron and Anna Mae (Butterfield) Hartzell. He graduated from Linesville High School in 1963 and graduated from Edinboro University with a degree in education. He worked for Norwalk City Schools, where he later retired, after over 40 years teaching subjects in social studies and world geography. He was never far from teaching as he also administered the GED test several times a year and assisted students with graduating who were in an alternative program.
In his retirement, he was very active with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Friends of the Norwalk Library, the Norwalk Lions Club, and also gave tours at the Marblehead Lighthouse. He had a love for the ocean and would frequent the Outer Banks of North Carolina every year.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn (Burr) Hartzell, and three children; Lanny and Vicky Howell of Norwalk, Deanna Engelhardt (Tim Bell) of Canandaiqua, New York, and Nicole Betschman of Laurel, Maryland. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Joe Farris, Hayley Engelhardt, and Marissa Moyer, in addition to three great grandchildren, Joseph Farris II, Bentley Pounds, and Aiden Moyer. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Easler of Greenville, Pennsylvania, and two brothers, Grant and Shirley Hartzell of Grove City, Pennsylvania, and Gary and Lana Hartzell of Linesville, Pennsylvania. He also has several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews who he loved greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mildred (Wise) Hartzell, by his brother, Thomas Hartzell, and by his nephew, Alan Zoner.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stein Hospice at 2500 Sycamore Line Drive in Sandusky, Ohio or the flower fund of the Norwalk Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 7, 2013 at 11am at the Norwalk Presbyterian Church at 21 Firelands Blvd. Arrangements will be handled by the Walker Funeral Home of Norwalk, Ohio.
