James E. Gilbert, 85, of Mansfield and formerly of Sandusky died Thursday afternoon, September 19, 2013 in the MedCentral Health System, Mansfield following a brief illness.

He was born June 30, 1928 in Sandusky and was a graduate of Sandusky High School.

Jim honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the former Calvary Episcopal Church in Sandusky. After working for New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors for 10 years, he moved to Mansfield, where he worked as a skilled tool & die maker for Hi-Stat in Lexington, Ohio. "Uncle Jim" was known as fun-loving by his friends and family. He particularly enjoyed flying with his nephew, Tom LaFree, who piloted a small plane. Jim enjoyed college football and especially Ohio State. When Ohio State played Notre Dame, the phone lines between him and his Indiana relatives would be buzzing. A highlight of Jim's summers was the annual gathers at Imogene's, with his friends and their four-legged companions. Jim will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his long time friend: Imogene Kiamy of Mansfield, one sister: Ann (Richard) LaFree of Mishawaka, Indiana, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: James L. & Helen (Taylor) Gilbert, and three sisters: Marian (John) Souter, Marjorie (Dale) Loe, and Jean (Dave) Casavar.
