Ruth Toney Henderson, 98, of Sandusky and formerly of Oil City, PA., passed away Thursday evening, October 24, 2013 in the Parkvue Health Care Center, Sandusky.
She was born January 19, 1915, the daughter of Sam & Ruth (Daugher) Toney of DuBois, PA.
Ruth graduated with honors in 1933 from St. Catherine of Sienna High School in DuBois, PA. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Montgomery Ward Company from graduation until the time of her marriage to George S. Henderson in 1947. At that time, she moved to Oil City, PA. and together they raised six children. Ruth was active in the Altar Society at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, American Red Cross, the Parent/Teacher Organization, and several bridge clubs.
She was employed by Northwest Pennsylvania Bank and Trust, now Mellon Bank, as a loan officer for 15 years, retiring in 1981. She spent her retirement traveling, finally settling in Sandusky in 1991. She joined the 'Newcomers Club' and became active in bridge clubs at the Erie County Senior Center, the Red Hat Club, attended Saints Peter and Paul Church, and is a past member of the VFW Auxiliary. As a resident of the Parkvue Community, she participated in a variety of groups and activities during the 12 years she resided there.
Ruth is survived by two brothers: Sam Toney of DuBois, PA., Lawrence Toney of Palm Coast, FL., one sister-in-law: Ann Toney of DuBois, PA. She will be sadly missed by four sons and their families: George, Jr. and Ruth and their children: Jim, George III, and Katie of Port Lucie, FL., Edward and Lyn and their families: Edward, Jr. and Sara and Christopher and Kendra, all of Albuquerque, NM., Dr. John M. Henderson and his two daughter's families: Amy and Michael Scott of Waverly Hall, GA., and Sarah and Tony Stark of Fort Mitchell, AL., Joseph and Karen and their sons: John, Daniel, and Matthew, all of Houston, TX. Also surviving are two daughters and their families: Mary & Mark Dahlmann, with daughters: Carolyn and her fiance Jason Maurer of Norwalk, and Elizabeth and her fiance John Walters of Sandusky, and Margaret Swanson and Joe Hammons and her three children: daughter Diana and Brett Bell, Stephanie and son Benjamin of Warsaw, IN., Eleven great grandchildren will cherish her memory: Morgan, Gavin, Gwendolyn, Abram, Kira, Lilly, Will, Tony, Ethan, Dezerae, and Isabella and one on the way. Her life touched dozens of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, George Henderson, Sr. in 1983, one sister: Nellie in childhood, four brothers: Mitchell, John, LeRoy and Edward Toney, and one grandson: John M. Henderson, Jr.
A private family memorial will be held to celebrate her life. Her final resting place is in the Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens, Franklin, PA. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky. Condolences may be shared with the family at pfeilfuneralhome.com.
