Thomas A. Johnson Sr., 74, residing in Sandusky, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Providence Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Thomas was born on December 27, 1938 in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Franklin and Marjorie (Neer) Johnson.
Thomas was a graduate from Sandusky High School in 1956. He was employed with Sohio and also owner of Tom's Auto Service, where he was a well known, honest mechanic for over fifty years. Thomas was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky Lodge of Elks No. 285 and the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, jigsaw puzzles, automobile racing, his 1965 Corvette, playing cards, outdoor activities and guitar. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially watching his grandchildren play. He liked summer activities with his family and spending as much time as he could with friends and family.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Eckler) Johnson, whom he married on November 16, 1957. He is also survived by his daughters, Debbie (Tom) McGory of Castalia and Sherry (Doug) Priestas of Sandusky; sons, Thomas (Stephanie) Johnson Jr. of Berlin Heights and David (Amber) Johnson of Sandusky; eleven grandchildren, Melissa, Heather, Betsy, Tommy, Douglas, Adam, Paul, Tyler, Corey, David Jr. and Jordan; six great grandchildren, Kaden, Gavin, Garrett, Anna, Caleb and Hunter; sister, Diane Kieffer of Norwalk; brother, Ronnie (Mary Lou) Johnson of Sandusky; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by his brother, Franklin Johnson Jr., and great-grandson, Thomas James Christman.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 3, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. A prayer service will take place in the funeral home on Monday at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church 429 Central Ave. Sandusky. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
