Richard Andrew Wennes, 44, residing in Huron, passed away Thursday evening, November 28, 2013 at Stein Hospice Care Center following a 12 year courageous battle with brain cancer.
Rich was born on October 25, 1969 in Sandusky, OH to Richard S. and Karen S. (Smith) Wennes Huron, Ohio.
Rich graduated from Huron High School in 1988. He was a member of the football and basketball teams. Rich holds the 3rd all time receiver record in Huron football history. Following graduation he was accepted and attended the U.S Air Force Academy Prep School. He was a 1992 graduate of Bowling Green State University receiving his Bachelor of Education (Cum Laude) Rich was proud of the fact that he was able to walk on the BGSU football team. In 1998 he received his Master of Education from Ashland University. Rich taught Social Studies and coached basketball and football at Edison High School from 1994 until 1998. In the fall of 1998 Rich accepted a position teaching Social Studies and was an assistant and promoted to head varsity basketball coach in 2001at Sandusky High School.
Rich was a dedicated Huron High School Sports fan, and was thru and thru an avid sports fan enjoying tailgating before the Browns games, at one time was the youngest stock holder with the Cleveland Cavaliers, enjoyed the Ohio State football team attending the National Championship Game in 2002. Rich also enjoyed jogging, weight-lifting, playing basketball, reading and especially spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents Rich is survived by his children, Kailee Wennes, and Drew Wennes both of Huron; his sister, Kerri (Jason) Ziegler of Sandusky; his brother, Rhett Wennes of Huron; niece, Elizabeth Ziegler; nephews, Jacob and Joseph Ziegler; aunts, Ann Glass of Erie, PA and Kim (Rex) Harris of Columbus, OH; the mother of his children Amy (Majoy) Wennes, and numerous other relatives.
Rich is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Elaine Emmerick and Royden Smith and his paternal grandparents Elizabeth and Richard Wennes.
Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday December 3, 2013 at 11 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky, OH. The Rev. Jan Smith-Wood and the Rev. Webster Maughan will co-officiate. Inurnment will follow in Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium.
