Howard Charles Smith, Jr., M.D., 87, of Huron, died early Friday morning, December 6, 2013 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, following a two year illness.
He was born April 29, 1926 to Howard Charles & Mary Elizabeth (McArthur) Smith, Sr. in Buffalo, New York.
He attended Buffalo Public School # 81 and graduated from Bennett High School in 1943. Howard attended The University of Buffalo from September 1943 until January 1944, when in enlisted into the United States Navy Reserve at the age of 17 as an apprentice seaman. He rose to Petty Officer 1st Class, flying as radio-radar aircrew on various Naval planes based at Guam, Tinian, Peleliu, and Leyte (Phillipines). He was then discharged from the Navy on May 25, 1946.
He returned to the University of Buffalo, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1949, and University of Buffalo Medical School earning his MD in 1953. He served his internship and residency in Obstetrics / Gynecology fro 1954 - 1958 at EJ Meyer Memorial Hospital including a year as a "Fellow" in gynecologic surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Hospital. Dr. Smith began his Obstetrics / Gynecology practice in Sandusky in August of 1958 with Drs. Dean Sheldon and James Printy. He served as the President of the medical staffs at former Good Samaritan Hospital and the former Providence Hospital, both in Sandusky.
Howard learned the sail from his father at the age of 8, and it remained one of his favorite lifelong avocations. He sailed Lake Erie, the Atlantic; from Bermuda to New London and the Gulf of Alaska; from Ketchikan to Sitka. Howard also enjoyed downhill skiing and classical music and loved to read history. He traveled the United States, Western Europe, Egypt, Russia, Australia/New Zealand and South America, He was a life member of the Sandusky Sailing Club, the Erie county Conservation League as well as the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He is survived by his wife, the former Janet L. Taylor, whom he married on January 14, 1959, his children: Jenny E. Smith of Bloomfield, CT., Howard C. Smith, III of Germantown, MD., Andrew D. Smith of Graegle, CA., and one grandson: Colin D. Smith of Fort Wayne, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
