Sophia Jane (DeLaine) Monegan

Sophia Jane (DeLaine) Monegan, 94, of Sandusky, quietly, and with joy in her heart and no more pain, made her transition to be with her Heavenly Father late Friday evening, December 6, 2013 in Providence Care Center when Jesus whispered softly, "I have prepared your new home, come."

She was born in Cuba, Alabama on May 22, 1919, the third child of Joshua and Loveonia (Brown) DeLaine.

She attended Kinterbish High School and helped her parents on the family farm until moving to Meridian, Mississippi in 1942, where she worked as a cook in a local restaurant. In 1947 Sophia married Mathes Monegan, Sr. They moved to Sandusky where they lived, worked, and raised their family together until his death in 1980.

As a child, Sophia was baptized and joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in Cuba, Alabama. After moving to Sandusky she attended Second Baptist Church while searching for a permanent church home. In 1955 Sophia made Ebenezer Baptist Church her home by becoming a member under Christian experience where she attended faithfully until she was unable. Sophia served under Cornelius N. Harris (1941-1958), Rev. Leon Troy (March of 1958-1964), Dr. Calvin K. Stalnaker (interim 1964-1966), Dr. Curtis Asa Brown (1966-2009), and Pastor Clayton E. Howard. Sophia's greatest love was Sunday school. She was a 48 year member of the Ebenezer Busy Bee Circle. She was part of the Women's Missionary, Women's Day Choir, SERS (School Employee Retirement Systems), past member of the NAACP, Wee Too Club, and the Porter's Memorial Nutritional Site.

While living here in Sandusky she was employed by several companies including: Philco, Regal Hotel, Howard Johnson's (23 years), Sandusky City Schools, and Scott Paper Company. Before moving to Sandusky, she worked as a hair dresser in Meridian, Mississippi. Having six girls, the expense of doing hair was not an option.

She leaves to cherish her legacy nine daughters, Terry Kinnard, of Chicago, Illinois, Helen Qualls, of Oakland, California, Barbara Lanier, of Sandusky, Delphine Prophet, of Toledo, Ohio, Nora Lee Monegan, of Sandusky, Maggie (Jewel) Haralson, of Fremont, Ohio, and Loveonia Monegan, Yvonne Easterling, and Linda Monegan Pettis, all of Sandusky; one son, Ernest (Percil) DeLaine, of Charleston, South Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Mathes, in 1980; stepson, Matthew, Sr.; parents, Joshua and Loveonia (Brown) DeLaine; four sisters, Annie Neal Smith-Adams, Lucille Vann, Carolyn Travis, and Mamie DeLaine; two brothers, JoCephus DeLaine and William Henry DeLaine; special niece, Juanita Graham, in March of 2012; and a very dear son-in-law, whom she always call "her son", Lawrence Kinnard, in April of 2012.

Friends may call from 3-7 P.M. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Friends may also call from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 Noon on Friday at Harvest House Missionary Baptist Church (First Presbyterian Church), 265 Jackson St., Sandusky. Pastor Eric Hershel Brown will preach the eulogy. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
