Ruth B. Wensink

Ruth B. Wensink, 91, Monroeville, passed away December 19, 2013, with family members by her side.

She was born on November 6, 1922, in Sheffield, Ohio. On November 23, 1944, she married her lifetime partner, Norbert Wensink, who preceded her in death.

In 1947, Ruth and Norbert moved their family to Erie County and together they were members of the founding team of Wensink Farm Seeds.

Ruth was a member and supporter of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky where she was past president of the Altar & Rosary Society and reader and commentator. During her lifetime, Ruth was a co-founder of the Oxford Hustlers 4-H Club, a member of the Erie County Farm Bureau and was president of Erie County Extension Homemakers. Ruth helped to develop the 4-H camp on Kelleys Island, and for her efforts she was awarded the State 4-H Leadership Award. She was recognized as a Woman of Excellence by the American Association of University Women because of her support in providing opportunities for women to succeed in science-oriented careers.

Ruth enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She and her husband toured throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and visited the Netherlands, Canada, Korea, Egypt, Italy, Germany, China and countries in Central and South America.

Ruth had a strong work ethic and deep religious faith. She and her husband were founders of The Ruth & Norbert Wensink Scholarship for Sandusky Central Catholic School and are Charter Members of the Sandusky-Erie Community Foundation. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her children: Bonita Wyse, Logan, Utah; Robert (Ellen) and Richard (Kay) Wensink, Monroeville, Ohio; Jane (Michael) Rafferty, Jacksonville, FL; and Joyce (Martin) Tremmel, Columbus, Ohio; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters Sr. Mary Jeanmarie Dechant SND, and Rosemarie Dechant, and her brother Herbert Dechant.

She was preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Rose (Conrad) Dechant, her brother Ken Dechant and an infant sister.

Friends will be received on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 9:00 am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave. Sandusky, OH 44870. Burial will follow in Sandhill Cemetery.
