Edward J. "Ed" Naufel, 77, of Sandusky, died Saturday morning, December 21, 2013 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 17, 1935 in Sandusky and was a 1953 graduate of Sandusky St. Mary's Central Catholic High School. He attended Indiana Technology College and was a U.S. Army veteran. Ed was a member of the IBEW Local Union 867, and had worked at Cedar Point for 29 years. He also was a substitute teacher at Sandusky High and Ehove. His membership also included St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Booster Club, where he was a past president and board member. In 2009, he was inducted into the SMCC Hall of Fame. For many years, Ed was very involved with the football and wrestling programs at SMCC and Defiance College (where his sons participated).
Ed served as a usher at the Notre Dame Stadium for 10 years, and had been a life long fan of the "Fighting Irish". He and his wife, Lucy, welcomed students, athletes, officials, coaches, and player's parents from across the country to be friends. He was a proud father and grandfather, supporting his boys and grandchildren throughout their careers.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Lucille "Lucy" Kramer, five sons: Mitch (Mary) Naufel of Toledo, Mike (Deidre) Naufel of Fremont, Matt (Nancy) Naufel of Naples, FL., Mark Naufel of Sandusky and Marty Naufel of Oregon, OH., ten grandchildren: Carly, Craig, Ryan (Emily) Courtney, Brandon, Tyler, Connor, Brock, Madisyn, Morgyn, one sister: Beverly (John) Shufflin of Pontiac, MI., one brother-in-law: Jack Conley of Castalia, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward & Alice (Stein) Naufel, and one sister: Alice Conley.
Friends may call Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM in the Holy Angels Gymnasium, 428 Tiffin Avenue, Sandusky and on Friday, December 27, 2013 from 9:00 AM until time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. The Rev. Joseph Steinbauer will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
