Joseph L. Shine, 87, of Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, December 17, 2013 in Firelands Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born July 7, 1926 to the late Anthony and Lou Della Shine in Starkville, Mississippi, where he grew up. On December 17, 1961, he united in holy matrimony with Elzada L. Shine.
Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944. He retired from Farrell-Cheek Steel after 25 years, was an owner/operator with Steel Transport for 20 years, and was an owner of Shine's Grocery Store for 28 years.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 52 years, Elzada L. Shine; five daughters, Wilma Jean Phenix, of Toledo, Ohio, Terry Gaskins, of Mansfield, Ohio, Dale (Reef) Young, of Sandusky, and Sharon Shine and Valerie Shine, both of Jacksonville, FL; son, Ronald (Dafney) Shine, of Jacksonville, FL; brother, Tannie Shine, of Sandusky; three sisters, Girtha Thomas and Annie R. Shine, both of Memphis, TN, and Annie K. Tate, of Starkville, MS; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary A. Sykes, Susie M. Brown, and Rosie L. Shine; and four brothers, Richard Shine, M.C. Shine, Anthony Shine, Jr., and Willie L. Shine.
Friends may call from 10 A.M. until 12 Noon on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Porter's Memorial C.M.E. Church, 1722 Third St., Sandusky. Funeral services will start at Noon. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, where the American Legion Post 83 Honor Guard will provide military honors.
