Claude H. Smith

Claude H. Smith – 90, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Monday evening January, 20, 2014 in Fisher Titus Medical Center.

He was born May 26, 1923 in Pontiac, Ohio to the late Ernest E. and Hilda C. (Linder) Smith, and was a lifelong area resident.

Claude was a veteran of the US. Army Air Corp, serving in World War II in the Southern Philippines, Luzon, New Guinea, and Bismark Archipalago. Claude received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 4 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the W.W. II Victory Medal. 

He retired with 35 years of service as Sales Manager for Routh Meat Packing, Sandusky, Ohio. Claude will be remembered by many as the meat cutter at the Modern Market, Norwalk, Ohio.  He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, a life member of Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Norwalk Elks, and Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion. Claude was an avid boater, he also enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, roller skating, wood carving, and traveling.

Claude is survived by his wife of 6 ½ years Jean ( Cook) Smith, by his children, Paul H. and Deb Smith of Bellevue, Ohio, Kurt J. and Linda Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, Karlan A. Daniel of Norwalk, Ohio, Mark J. Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, and Scot P. and Kelly Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, 8 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his step daughters, Tina Sutherland of New London, Ohio, Patricia Welty of Alverado, Texas, Shirl Felder of Norwalk, Ohio, Deborah Hornyak of Toledo, Ohio, Kelly Cook of Wakeman, Ohio, and Jennifer Cook of Norwalk, Ohio, 12 step grandchildren, and 13 step great grandchildren. 

Claude was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Mae Smith in 2003, and by his infant son, Larry Smith, and by his granddaughter, Jordan Smith in2008. 

Friends may call on Friday, January 24, 3014 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
