It is with a sad heart to say we lost a great centurion, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Helen Wood Rice of Admiral's Pointe, Huron, OH. She passed quietly surround by her family on Monday, January 20, 2014, after a brief illness.
Helen was born on July 28, 1913 in Seneca, SC to Edward Wood and Ella Lee (Vance) Wood-Lee. She came to Sandusky at an early age and went to Sandusky Public Schools. She married Robert Rice on February 22, 1933. She wore many hats in different occupations, but finished her last fifteen years as culinary cook for Huron County CAC. Helen was the oldest member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Richard V. Rice, Rochester, NY; four daughters, Carole E. Sherman, Ruth E. Knight, Dolores O. Rice and Donna J. McClellan all of Sandusky, OH; two sons-in-law, Pete Porter and Robert H. McClellan; nineteen grandchildren, Richard A., Robert A., Brian, Eric, Gordon, Russell and Starr Sherman, Crystal Sherman-Payton, Gregory, Craig and Clinton Rice, Frankie L. Knight, Stephen Knight, James Porter, G. Elaine Hines, Douglas Rice, Allyson Arrington, Amy McClellan-Blackwell and Keith McClellan; 27 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elma Rice; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rice (8-2-75); two daughters, Mary Helen Rice in infancy (7-42) and Janet E. Porter (2-26-2010); one sister, Josephine Lucille Cheetham; two brothers, Walter E. Wood and Lawson Wood; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Friends may call Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 East Perkins Avenue Sandusky, OH. Funeral services will be Monday, January 27, 2014 at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Jerome Arrington officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Dinner will be served immediately after burial at Firelands Realtors 2716 South Campbell Street Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
