Robert J. "Bob" Simon, 84, of Monroeville died Monday evening February 3, 2014 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 9, 1929 in Monroeville and was a 1947 graduate of Monroeville High School, where he was class valedictorian.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Korean War. He retired in 1985 after 36 years with the U.S. Postal Service where he began as a clerk and rural carrier and then became the Postmaster of the Monroeville Post Office. Bob was also a nine year volunteer fireman at the former Monroeville Village Fire Department. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroeville, and the Knights of Columbus, St. John Newman Chapter No. 1117, where he was past Grand Knight and held various district and state positions. He also owned and operated Simon's Watch Repair from 1959 to 1979. He was a former member of the Monroeville School Board, Monroeville Village Council and St. Joseph Church Council. After retirement he enjoyed woodworking and traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Eileen Soisson, one daughter: Patricia (Mark) Camino of Concord Township, Ohio, two sons: Thomas (Rebecca) Simon of Plainville Massachusetts and Gerald (Kristy) Simon of Norwalk, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Roman and Estella (Egle) Simon, one sister: Rose Arlene Fisher and one brother: Donald Simon.
Friends may call Friday, February 7, 2014 from 3-7:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville, Ohio 44847, where the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7:00 PM Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 8, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville, Ohio. The Rev. William Pifher will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroeville.
