Francis D. "Bud" Link, 91, residing in Sandusky, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 at his home.
Bud was born on October 25, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Frank and Amelia (Singler) Link.
Bud graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1940. He attended GM Tech in Michigan before joining the service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, proudly serving his country during WWII as a Navy pilot instructor in TBM Torpedo Bombers. He retired from the former Delco Chassis Division of General Motors in 1982 as an industrial engineer after 35 years of service. He was an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus #546, member of the Elks Lodge #285, the IAB, American Legion Post #83 and the Providence Hospital Volunteer Association.
He was a life member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, a Eucharistic minister, an instructor to incoming altar servers, an adult altar server and a mass usher. Bud served on the Parish Council, was a co-leader of the Diocesan Development Fund, Chairman of the parish festivals and a team member of the Soup Kitchen.
Bud was a Charter member, President and Secretary of the CHSAF, Charter member and Vice-president of the SMCC Alumni Association, scorer and timer for SMCC basketball for 35 years, member of the school board, member of SMCC centralization committee, bingo team leader and was very proud to be known by the SCCS students as the "French Fry" man.
Bud was recognized for special awards from his alma mater of which he was most proud including in 1987 The Golden Bell, 1991 the "M" Award, 2000 Charter member of the SMCC Hall of Fame and the 2011 Mary Ann Sloan SCCS Volunteer of the Year.
Bud is survived by three daughters, Kathleen (Richard) Wollenberg of Norwalk, Mary Beth (Michael) Samstag and Patricia (Mark) Conger, both of Sandusky; two sons, Thomas (Gemma) Link and Denny (Connie) Link, both of Sandusky; fourteen grandchildren, Lisa (Patrick) Cingel, Scott (Amy) Wollenberg, Jason (Betsy) Samstag, Sarah (Joel) Richwagen, Brad (Abbey) Link, Tyler Link, Aaron (Kelli) Link, Mallory (Marcos) Ramos, Michael (Eliza) Link, Seth (Tracy) Link, Kimberly (Steve) Flores, Kayla Link, Alyssa Link and Link Conger; 13 great-grandchildren, Isabella, Gina, Sophia, Kylee and Christy, Grace and Ava, Elsie, Everett, and Alexa, Graden, Stone, and Baela; sister, Dorothy Anne Burtch of Northville, MI; two brothers, Frank (Susan) Link of Sandusky and the Reverend David Link of South Bend, IN; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Link, Eileen (Roth) May, Ronald Roth, Thomas (Barb) Roth; numerous nieces, nephews and many great friends.
In addition to his parents, Buds is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen (Roth) Link; sister, Mary Jeanne Weyer; and brother, Lawrence Link.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Prayers will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky with Father Joe Steinbauer and Father David Link co-officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky, Ohio.
