Lisa M. Cherry-Dewey, 44, of Huron, passed away Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2014 at Parkvue Healthcare Center, following a heroic battle with a rare form of cancer.
She was born February 27, 1969 in Sandusky, Ohio to Lonnie and Eleanor (Perkins) Cherry.
Lisa was a graduate of Monroeville High School and graduate of Heidelberg University, majoring in Music. She was currently attending the University of Toledo working on a Masters degree in Higher Education. She also graduated Leadership Ottawa County in 2013. She was employed at Terra State Community College as a Work Experience Advisor in Career Services, where she was honored with the Circle of Excellence Support Staff Award. She worked for EHOVE Career Center, Success for Youth Summer Work Experience Program, where she was a job site coordinator. She also worked for the U.S. Census Bureau as an Enumerator in 2009. Lisa was a campaign worker for the Ohio Democratic Party and a member of the Erie County Democratic Women. She was the county contact for the former Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner's campaign. Lisa truly was a community advocate that every vote counts. She supported green efforts in water quality and recycling. She acted as the PTO secretary and treasurer for the Huron School System, and Erie/Huron County CAC Head Start Family Services Advocate. She was former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Norwalk, and a Program Chair and President at her Church, Unitarian Universalist of Erie County. She touched the lives of many people, with her kind spirit and selfless efforts to help others.
Including her parents, she is survived by her loving husband, Richard Dewey, whom she married September 21, 1996; her two children, Richard and Kenneth Dewey; her brother, David (Linden) Garwood; cousins, Karen Dorsey and Tom Wilson raised by her parents; and her special friend, Kathie (Al) Mueller.
Friends may call, Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 5-8 PM at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Friends may also call, Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM in the Funeral Home. Rev. Mary Grigolia will be officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
