Betty Y. (Kramer) Galloway, 95, residing on Galloway Road, Sandusky, passed away late Thursday morning, March 6, 2014 at The Meadows at Osborn Park after a lengthy illness.
Betty was born on October 15, 1918 in Milan, Ohio to the late Edward F. and Corinne (Shaffer) Kramer and spent her lifetime in Sandusky. On Thanksgiving 1939 Betty married her beloved husband, Bill A. Galloway and thereafter had three children.
Betty was a member of the class of 1937 at Sandusky High School; however, due to the illness of her mother, was forced to drop out of school and did not graduate with her class. As a result of her accomplishments as a member of the community, she was awarded a diploma by the Sandusky Board of Education in 1994.
Betty worked during World War II at the Philco plant and thereafter for a number of years spent her time as a housewife and mother and ran the concession stand at Lions Park. She later accepted employment as an office worker at Good Samaritan Hospital and thereafter served as the office manager at Ebert & Son Motor Sales in Norwalk, Ohio prior to retirement.
Betty was an avid gardener, raising and selling the sweetest strawberries in the area for years with the assistance of her children. She loved being outdoors and doing such things as fishing or attending sporting events, especially football. Betty enjoyed canning, and was an excellent cook, and loved having pets, especially dogs.
Following retirement she devoted much of her time doing volunteer work at Emmanuel Church baking coffee cakes, helping at Care and Share, the Ohio Veterans Home and at the Erie County Care Facility. She was very active in the Garden Club and was a member of the Red hat Society. Betty was awarded the distinction of being volunteer of the year in 1992 by the Volunteer Center.
Betty was artistic. Following the death of her dear husband, Bill, she took up wood carving and excelled at carving local waterfowl and other birds.
Above all she loved her family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Bruce) Huntzinger of Flagstaff, Arizona; sons, Duane (Susan Waldock) Galloway of Sandusky and Jim (Deborah Kiss) Galloway of Novi, Michigan; and grandchildren, Brett and Deb Huntzinger, Sean, Kelly, and Katie Galloway and Bill Galloway; four great-grandchildren; brother, Carl (Grace) Kramer of Orange Park, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bill A. Galloway, and grandchildren, Michael Galloway and Jonathan Galloway.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 334 Columbus Ave. Sandusky, Ohio 44870 with Rev. Wayne Brockway and Rev. Edgar Shelly presiding. The Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute in Betty's memory may do so to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870 or Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 334 Columbus Ave. Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
