Lamar E. "Woody" Wood, 89, of Sandusky, died Wednesday afternoon, March 19, 2014 in the Admiral's Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Huron following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 10, 1925 in Fremont, Ohio.
As Private First Class in the U.S. Army during WW II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a certificate of merit for outstanding performance of military duty and multiple medals and stars. Lamar was a 32 year employee of the former New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors. He was a member of the Commodore Denig Post 83, American Legion, Lowell C. Hein Post 2529, V.F.W., and the Amvets Post 17, all of Sandusky. His hobbies included working on cars, tinkering in the garage, gardening, bicycling and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Rita Puchalski, one daughter: Kathleen Wood Beier of Sandusky, five grandchildren: Joseph (Jill) Wood, Jr. of Powell, OH., Jennifer (Brian) Years of Victor, N.Y., Julia Williams and Andrew Beier, both of Sandusky and Richard Wood of Grove City, OH., five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two sons: Joseph L. Wood, Sr. and David R. Wood, his parents: Edwin & Irene (Drown) Wood and two brothers: Doyle Wood and Virgil Barr.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until time of memorial service at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 24, 2014 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Deacon Jeff Claar will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Castalia Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at Holy Angels gathering room following the cemetery services.
