Gustava Garrett, Jr., 84, of Sandusky, departed on Tuesday afternoon, April 29, 2014 in Firelands Regional Medical Center.
In the mid 1940s, Gus brought the entire Garrett clan to Sandusky from Alpine, Alabama. He was a member of Victory Temple, and was known as "Pops" at the Victory Temple soup kitchen, where he volunteered for many years. He was the Senior Warden of the New St. John Lodge #193 of the International Masons. He served his country in the Korean Conflict as a member of the U.S. Army.
Gus worked at Aluminum Magnesia, know as Al Mag, which later became Vulcan Material. He also worked as a skilled mason. Gus was an avid hunter and fisherman, skills that he brought with him from Alabama.
Gus is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean (Pou) Garrett; daughters, Juanita Sherrills, of Columbus, OH, Norciva (Jim) Kosior, of Atlanta, GA, Kathy (Michael) Goncalves, Camille (Alvin Crosby) Sibbitt, and JoAnn (Charles) Grissom, all of Sandusky; sons, Elijah and Gustava (Belinda) Walls, both of Sandusky; special granddaughter, Chandrell (Boss Hog) Collins; special grandson, Greg Garrett; sister, Louise Maxie; special nephew, Darwitt R. Garrett; specially mention to Robert "Little Robert" Williams; 33 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends; and his faithful companion, Blue.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elnora (Woolfork) Garrett; parents, Gustava, Sr. and Mattie (Riggins) Garrett; son, Gus David Garrett; daughter, Mary Dean Garrett; great-grandsons, Fred Collins, III, LeShaun Sibbitt, and Jaqyuz Walls; brothers, Dwight Swain and Bobbie Garrett, Sr.; sisters-in-law, Marion Louise Fuller McKenzie Swain, Precious Roney Garrett Edmon, and Mary Elizabeth Cage Garrett.
Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 1 P.M. on Monday at Victory Temple, 1619 W. Strub Rd., Sandusky. Rev. Lonnie Walters will officiate. Entombment will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. The American Legion Post 83 Color Guard will provide military honors.
