William L. Newcomer Sr., age 89, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born February 11, 1925 in Ashland to the late William and Mary Newcomer.
He was the youngest of 14 children, attended Ashland Schools and served in the US Navy during WWII from 1942 until the war ended. He married the love of his life, Helen Sliwa and lived in Chicago until moving to Sandusky in 1950 and then Norwalk in 1959. Together they raised eight children. He worked at Eastern States Elevator in Huron and Ford Motor Co. where he retired. He enjoyed playing dart ball, horse shoes, ping pong, cards and board games with his children. He was a little league coach and attended all of his children activities
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife, Anna (Anderson) Newcomer of FL; children, George (Therese Schwartz) Newcomer of Sidney, Linda (Larry) Holmer of Norwalk, Mary Laferty of Norwalk, Patrick Newcomer of Columbus and David (Patricia Willman) Newcomer of Powell; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Helen (Sliwa) Newcomer in 1985, 2nd wife, Lois (Fitzgerald) Newcomer in 1995; children, Jeffrey L. Newcomer, William L. Newcomer Jr., and Janice M. Newcomer in infancy.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk. The Monsignor Kenneth Morman, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery.
