Dr. Russell Brooker, 72, passed away May 17, 2014 in his home in Costa Rica.
He was born September 29, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Russell E. and Dorothy (Pratt) Brooker, Sr. and was a 1960 graduate of Norwalk High School.
Dr. Brooker attended the University of Miami, the University of Tennessee, and received his doctorate from Ball State University. Before retiring last September, Dr. Brooker was a clinical psychologist in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia for forty years. During that time hundreds of individual's benefited from his warmth, compassion, and insight. He was one of the first openly gay psychologists in the country, and was active in the American Academy of Psychotherapists, and The Georgia Psychological Association. Dr. Brooker was the author of "Tips for Living a Better Life" in which he advised honesty, responsibility, and learning to forgive yourself.
Dr. Brooker is survived by his brother and sister in law, Rickard and Diana Brooker of Norwalk, Ohio, by his niece, Molly Brooker (Greg) Hipp, by his nephews, Rickard Brooker Jr., Russell (Jami) Brooker, Clayton Schaefer, by many dear friends and colleagues. He especially enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Ella.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Hollis Lee (Brooker) Schaefer in 2007.
Friends may call on Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Inurnment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
