Carl D. Essex

Carl D. Essex, 65, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away, Monday, August 11, 2014 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio after a long, difficult battle with cancer.

Carl was born July 24, 1949 in Elyria, Ohio to Carl and Dorothy (nee Klamet) Essex.

He is survived by his loving and cherished wife Susan Essex (nee Livengood), his step children Betsy Pajak (Greg) of Avon, Ohio and Brett Miller (Grace) of Martinez, Georgia and his grandchildren Sophia and Olivia Pajak and Paige Miller.

He was preceded in death by his grandchild, Matthew Pajak his brother Eugene R. Essex and his father Carl Essex.

Carl graduated from Midview High School in Carlisle Township and attended Ashland College for four years. At Ashland College, Carl was known for his outstanding abilities in debate, athletics and the dramatic arts.
Carl became involved in the construction industry at an early age. He worked on road crews during the summers while in high school and college. Upon leaving Ashland College, Carl spent time traveling around the country building pipelines. Following this assignment, Carl returned home to northern Ohio to begin his career in public service.

Carl's first public service job was as the Village Administrator for Grafton, Ohio. From there he went on to serve as the Recreation and Park Director for Willard, Ohio; the Director for Regional Planning under the Huron County Commissioners; Safety Service Director for the City of Bellevue; Village Administrator for North Fairfield Village and the Administrative Assistant for Huron County Engineers Larry Heit, Larry McGlinchy and Joe Kovach. Carl left public service for a period of time to work as a consultant and then as a Project Manager for Price Construction of Norwalk, Ohio. His most recent service was as president of the Huron County Regional Airport Authority.

Carl dedicated his life and his talents to public service. He was a passionate debater, a tireless worker and a champion for the people and communities that he served. Outside of his professional life, Carl was known for his many acts of kindness and generosity to the people whose lives he touched. He could always be counted upon to lend a helping hand no matter what the circumstances.

Carl's kindness and generosity extended to his loving family. He was always the favorite uncle or the son or brother that was called upon when anyone needed help or a stimulating conversation and a good laugh.

Carl is survived by his mother, Dorothy (Klamut) Essex, and by two loving sisters, Sandra Bishop (nee Essex) (David) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Elizabeth McMullen (nee Essex) (Daniel) of Naperville, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother Eugene Essex (Beverly). He also had a number of loving nieces and nephews including Lisa Morrison (nee Bishop) and Kelly Rowley (nee Bishop) of Cincinnati, Ohio; Ryan Essex of Hermosa Beach, California, Lauren Essex of Dallas, Texas and Scotia McMullen of Naperville, Illinois.

Friends may call on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Episcopal Church, 87 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Margaret D'Anieri will officiate. Interment will be in Milan Cemetery.
