Dolores Mary (Cunningham) Weichel

Dolores Mary (Cunningham) Weichel, aged 93 years, residing in Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, August 14, 2014.

Dolores was born on March 26, 1921 in Erie, PA to the late William J. and Catherine (Yochim) Cunningham.

Dolores graduated from Lakewood High School in 1939 and worked briefly at Charity Hospital and Ferry Cap both in the Cleveland area. During WWII, she enlisted in the Navy (Waves) and was stationed at Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Seattle, Washington as a cryptanalyst. Late in the war, she met Army PFC Robert Weichel Sr. of Castalia, OH and they married in 1946. Dolores worked for Hinde & Dauch and the former Providence Hospital, later helping found the Castalia Greenhouse with her son, William Weichel. She enjoyed growing flowers, meeting the public and especially treasured her 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Ohio Veterans Home, serving coffee and donuts to the veterans with her co-workers, Emmy and Marlene. She proudly participated in the Navy Wave and American Legion Veteran organizations, along with volunteering for the funeral luncheons and office functions at Holy Angel's Catholic Church.

She will be sadly missed, yet fondly remembered by her surviving sons, Robert (Mary) Weichel Jr. and William (Beth) Weichel; grandsons, David (Kathy) Weichel, Jonathan (Holly) Weichel, Kevin (Zuzanna) Weichel, James Weichel; granddaughters, Amy (Robert) Gabel, Lisa (Matt) Turner and Laura Weichel; great-grandchildren, Dan, Paul and Hannah Gabel, Ethan Weichel and Peyton and Hudson Turner.

In addition to her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert Sr.; 3 brothers, Terrence, Edward, and Joseph; 3 sisters, Margaret, Catherine Quinlan, and Agnes; 5 infant daughters, Linda, Jean, Ellen, Therese, and Catherine; great-grandson, Edward Robert; and nephew, William T. Cunningham.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Angel's Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky, OH. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Sandusky, OH.
