Eugene Matso, 83, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, August 20, 2014 at home surrounded by his family.
Eugene was born on October 2, 1930 on Kelleys Island, OH to the late Joseph and Mary (Tomko) Matso.
Eugene graduated from Kelleys Island High School. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army who proudly served his country during the Korean War in Germany. He was employed at the former Apex Company, Lyman Boat Works, Sea Raiders Boats, but his favorite job was working for the Lord and keeping His house clean at Holy Angels Catholic Church where he retired after 18 years. Eugene was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the VFW Post 2529 and the Sandusky Amvets Post 17. In his spare time, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, woodworking, putzing around the house, spending time on Kelleys Island and spending time with his family and friends.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Emma Jane (Seeholzer) Matso, whom he married on May 25, 1957. He is also survived by his daughters, Brenda (Gene) Riedy of Sandusky, Marie (Matt) Roesch of Sandusky, Diana Hiemstra of Youngstown and Carla (Dave) Christian of Sandusky; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Dye of Sandusky and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Eugene is preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Ostheimer and 3 brothers, Ralph, Lloyd and Russell Matso.
Friends may call on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Friends may also be received on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 9:00 am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky with Rev. Christopher Kardis presiding. Burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky, OH.
