Irma "Elaine" Lawson

Irma "Elaine" Lawson, 79, of Sandusky, passed away on Thursday afternoon, August 21, 2014 in Providence Care Center after a brief illness.

She was born on March 31, 1935 in Sandusky to the late Paul Alexander, Sr. and Beulah (Bryant) Alexander.

She was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church.
Elaine attended Sandusky City Schools, graduating from Sandusky High in 1953. She was also a graduate of the Providence School of Nursing, receiving her RN. Elaine was employed by Providence Hospital, Family Planning, the Ohio Veterans Home, and the Erie County Health Department, retiring in 1995, as head of the nursing department.

She enjoyed traveling, knitting, gardening, and reading.
An avid "black history buff," Elaine heavily researched the history of the Underground Railroad, and its connection with Sandusky and surrounding areas. Because of her tireless efforts, she was instrumental in securing Second Baptist Church on the National Register of Historic Places.

Elaine is survived by her two children, Roger A. Lawson and Elizabeth V. Jordan; nine grandchildren, Roger Lawson, Jr., Rachel Mull, Zakiyya Steinfeld, Maya Lawson Hunter, Jeremy Lawson, Jacob Hodges, and Michael, Lily, and Lacy Lawson; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbera (Alexander) Keels and Sharon (Alexander) Jackson; brother-in-law, William Lawson, and his family; cousin, Gyrace Harmon, and her family; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married in 1957, Lacy R. Lawson, in 1977; children, Cynthia M. Lawson, in 1971, and Denver L. Lawson, in 2003; sisters, Patricia Jean, Margaret, Louise, and Brenda; and brother, Paul "Duke", Jr.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 26 from 6-8 P.M. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Wednesday at Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St., Sandusky. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
