Egbert A. "Bert" Gray, 89, residing in Sandusky, passed away Thursday evening, October 16, 2014 at Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born on June 12, 1925 in Zela, West Virginia to the late Thomas E. and Pina (McClung) Gray.
Bert was employed at American Crayon for 16 years before retiring from the former New Departure in 1991 after 22 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army. Bert was a member of the Sandusky Yacht Club and the UAW. He was on the Erie County Fair Committee and a volunteered for the Humane Society of Erie County. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, doing yard work, telling stories, bowling, the Cleveland Indians, going out to eat, especially at Beradi's and spending time with his family and friends.
Bert is survived by his two sons, Donald and Ronald (Nikki) Gray both of Sandusky; 9 grandchildren, Megan, Sebrina, Kyle, Kendal, Erica, Victoria, Sarah, Hollie and Daniel; 16 great-grandchildren, Ella, J.J, Kevin, Tommie, Landon, Jaidan, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Elijah, Josiah, Jedidiah, Elise, Mackenzie, Briah, Aliyah and Julia; sister, Hester Drennen of Sandusky and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Bert is preceded in death by his companion of 35 years, Florence Byers; daughter in infancy Patricia Ann Gray; and siblings, Imo Gene Donaldson, Garnet Cook, Virginia Cavendish, Joseph Gray, Hazel Vickers and Marie Grose.
Friends may call on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 11:00 am with Cornelius Amison presiding.
