Donald E. Benedict

Donald E. Benedict, 90, passed away at his home in Deland, Florida, August 21, 2014.

Don was born in Norwalk, Ohio, January 5, 1924.

He was a decorated veteran of W.W. II, receiving the bronze star for meritorious achievement in ground combat. He attended and graduated from the Ohio State University in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Initially he was employed by General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio until 1961 when he returned to Norwalk and accepted a position with NASA Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio, and later transferring to John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

After retiring, he and his wife, Marjorie, moved to Ft. Myers, Florida, and enjoyed his retirement playing golf, and being an active member of the community, later moving to Deland, Florida to be closer to his children.

Don served the city of Norwalk as a member of the Park and Recreation Board from 1967 until 1972. From 1972 until his retirement in August 1990, he served on the Board of Zoning Appeals for the city of Norwalk. Don and Marge, and the benedict family, have strong ties to the Norwalk area where they raised their family.

Donald is survived by his children, Mary Ann (Norm) Denger of South Amherst, Ohio, David C. Benedict of Mentor, Ohio, Donna Johnson of Orange City, Florida, and James Benedict of Deland, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Pat Kovanda of Novelty, Ohio, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie (Reineck), by his mother, Mable Jones, by his father, Roland Benedict, by his sister, Gerry Klouser, and by his Aunt, Bess Benedict.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Inurnment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Milan Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.
