Douglas A. Colvin

Douglas A. Colvin, 81, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014 in Fisher Titus Medical Center.

He was born March 25, 1933 in Norwalk, Ohio to the late Ralph L. and Helen L. (Sutton) Colvin and was a lifelong area resident.

Doug graduated from St. Mary's Elementary School, Norwalk High, and Oberlin School of Commerce. He also attended Ohio State University, and Bowling Green State University, serving as Veterans Club Director at Ohio State University. Doug served in the United States Army, U.S. Naval Air Reserve, and the Ohio Military Reserve, retiring as a Colonel in 2000. He established Colvin Tax Service in 1955 and was President of Maple City Professional Services since 1990. Doug was the last City Auditor and first Director of Finance for the City of Norwalk, as well as a councilman, and democratic candidate for State Representative. Having "Norwalk Roots" he also worked for Norwalk Truck Line and Norwalk Furniture, as well as a Real Estate Broker, and as a Cost Accountant for General Motors in Sandusky, Ohio.

His veteran's affiliations included AMVETS (Commander and organizer of AMVET Post 1965), Past Commander of American Legion Post #41, VFW #2743, Catholic War Veterans, and Huron County Area Veterans Council. Having worked for, and with, Veterans to obtain business loans, he served as the Cleveland District Chairman of SBA and received the Veterans Advocate of the Year Award in 1985 for the Cleveland and Cincinnati Districts. Doug had also served the community as Treasurer of Whitney Field Improvements, Treasurer of Lefty Grove League, Chamber of Commerce, past President and recipient of the "Dedicated Service" and "Outstanding Leadership and Accomplishments Awards", Ohio Association of Realtors Salesman, Jaycee Boss of the Year Award, and Public Accountants Distinguished Award.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church (certainly not forgetting his prior St. Mary Parish) served over 6 years on St. Paul School Board, over 4 years on the Toledo Diocesan School Board, receiving the "Generous Service Award" from the Bishop, served on St. Paul Parish Council, Finance Committee and Guidance Advisory Committee.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 626 for over 55 years, he served as Financial Secretary and Grand Knight. Doug served on several civic, fraternal, and school committees, to include; Juvenile Court Advisory Board, Huron County Planning Commission, Red Cross Disaster Volunteer Official, Americanism Foundation, Thanksgiving for Life, Strawberry Festival, Child Abuse and Neglect Advisory Board, Norwalk Public School Parent Advisory Council, Junior Achievement Director, EHOVE Advisory Board, Health Planning Association of Northwestern Ohio, Member of both Norwalk and St. Paul Booster Clubs, Airport Authority, Eagles, Elks, Moose, and as speaker of Memorial, Veterans, and 4th of July observances.

On July 11, 1959 Doug and Jeannette (Reer) entered into Holy Matrimony and the Good Lord blessed them with three great sons, Jeff, Jim, and Chris. Jim added his wife Andrea and five grandchildren, Kevin, Colleen, Connor, Kathleen, and Kenton to the family. Then Chris added his wife, Elaine and a granddaughter, Julianne, completing the great immediate family of 13. (Doug's lucky number).

Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Colvin.

Friends may call on Sunday, November 30, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 1, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Fr. Nathan Bockrath will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.
