Hugh N. Shope

Hugh N. Shope, 97, of Norwalk, passed away on November 29, 2014.

Hugh was born on September 24, 1917 in Candler, North Carolina, was a graduate of Barberton High School in 1935 and attended Kent State University.

He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Barberton after 42 years of service as a Supervisor of quality control. He also worked with his wife, Virginia, who owned and operated Virginia Shope's womans apparel store in Barberton. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks and the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio in Barberton. He spent the last 26 years in Norwalk. He enjoyed travel, playing golf, watching Cleveland Indians baseball, NASCAR races and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Virginia (Segars), his sister Helen (Joe) Darensberg and his parents William B. Shope and Katy Sue (Cathey).

He is survived by Michael and Sandy (Livengood) Shope of Norwalk, Ronald and Judy (Kump) Shope of Loveland, OH, grandchildren Mark and Kail (Keefer) Shope of Norwalk, Gregory and Rebecca (Denton) Shope of Perrysburg, Lori and Dean Stewart of Cincinnati, Craig and Shelly Shope of Lynchburg, OH, Sue and Chris Hoffman of Loveland, OH, and eight great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Tuesday, December 2 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm and on Wednesday, December 3 from 10:00 am until the funeral service at 11:00 am at Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Ohio. Reverend Adrian Doll of the First Presbyterian Church will be officiating. Private burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Barberton, Ohio.
