Dorothy B. Kent

Dorothy B. Kent, 92, of Henderson, Nevada and formerly of Patten Tract Road, Sandusky died Thursday, March 17, 2011 in the St. Rose Delima Hospital, Henderson, Nevada. She fought a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Dorothy was born May 3, 1918 in Elyria, Ohio to Floyd & Vyrna Butler, She was the oldest of seven children and spent her childhood in Berlin Heights, Ohio She married James D. Kent on August 4, 1938 and gave birth to five children. Dorothy was known throughout Sandusky and surrounding area for her musical ability on the piano and organ. She pioneered getting women out of the "women only play for church" mindset when she joined several area bands during WW II, breaking the all male barrier of dance band and jazz music. She was the organist at St. John's Lutheran Church, Groton Twp. For many years. She taught many children and adults the art and love of piano and organ playing. In the early 1970�s, she and her husband moved to San Diego, where she was very active in the musical industry once again. She was a lifetime member of both the Sandusky/Cleveland Federation of Musicians and the San Diego Federation of Musicians. Dorothy was also a member of the San Diego Keyboard Club, where she served as secretary for a number of years.

She is survived by two sisters: Corrine Wendell of Lake Havasu City, AZ., and Marilyn Knoll of North Fairfield, OH., her children: Dorothy Matsel, Janet Lemelin both of Pontiac, Mi., James "Jim" (Sharon) Kent of Sandusky, Marilyn (Gary Robinson) Chisholm of Henderson, NV., and Jack (Ruth) Kent of Sandusky, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband: James "Jimmy" Kent in 1979, her parents and four brothers.

Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Friday, March 25, 2011 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 26, 2011. Pastor James E. Michaels will officiate. Burial will be in the Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
