Bessie Lee Smith

Bessie Lee Smith, 84, of Sandusky and formerly of Fort Wayne, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2015 under the care of Stein Hospice after a brief illness.

Bessie was born on February 25, 1930 in Humboldt, Tennessee to Gladys May (House) Smith and L. B. Roberson. She was raised by her grandmother from an early age.

Bessie relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she spent most of her adult life. She united with Union Baptist Church under Rev. Clyde Adams. She attended bible study and worked as a domestic at a hotel in the Fort Wayne area.

In her spare time Bessie enjoyed dancing, fishing, gardening, and going to yard sales. Her favorite colors were purple, white, and cream. One of her favorite foods was barbecue ribs.

Bessie leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Herbert (Janie) Hunt; step-brother, Pastor Tom, Sr. (Diane) Hayes; special cousin, Marcia Sails; special caregiver, Daisy "Sue" Grady; special friend, Will Stacey; along with a host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys House and L. B. Roberson; step-mother Elizabeth Roberson; husband, Henry L. Smith; and cousin and best friend, Robbie Nell (Hassell) McClendon.

Friends may call from 11 A.M. until time of funeral services at Noon on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Faith Christian Ministries, 200 Hancock St., Sandusky. The eulogy will be delivered by Pastor Darrell Gant, and burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
