Florence "Lay" Jones, 98 of Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord on, Tuesday January 13, 2015 at Stein Hospice Care Center.
She was born February 19, 1916 in Columbus Mississippi, to the late Jacob and Viola (Moody) Short.
She was a long time resident of Sandusky of over 60 years where she lived since leaving her home in Columbus in 1952. She retired from the former New Departure Hyatt, was a member of Local 913, an associate of the "Wee Too Club", member of the Sandusky Branch of the NAACP where she was recognized on two occasions. She was famous for her teacakes and apple pies, but more importantly she was known for her love of the Lord and her words of encouragement and inspiration.
Florence was a member Ebenezer Baptist Church, a membership spanning over 60 years. At Ebenezer she sang in the Senior Choir, attended Sunday School, Wednesday Prayer Meetings and volunteered at Vacation Bible School.
She is survived by her daughters: Mary D. (Willie "Jack") Brown, Minister Louberta Crosby, Catherine Woods, Annie L. (Curtis) Thorn and Brenda Register-Jones. Special grandson Darrius Brown, Sister, Catherine Ruffin, 21 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, numerous great, great, grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Will H. and John L. Jones, daughter, Helen R North, granddaughter Kimberly Brown, grandson LaDarrell Everett, two great granddaughters; one great grandson; brothers John, Johnson, and Ezekiel Short; sisters, Louberta Brown and Lizzie Morris, former husband Will H. Jones Sr., and son in law, LaVal Crosby.
Friends may call from 10 AM until time of funeral services at 11 AM on Saturday January 17, 2015 in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. Pastor Clayton E. Howard will officiate. The burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Florences's name may be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church Building Fund or Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky.
