Charles George Popke, Jr.

Charles George Popke, Jr., 92, Monroeville, died Saturday evening in Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born on March 4, 1922 in Sandusky to the late Gertrude (Riester) and Charles G. Popke, Sr.

He was employed by Wagner Quarries retiring after thirty eight years of service and was a veteran of the United States Army serving in WWII.

Charles was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 83 and the VFW Post 2529. He enjoyed woodworking, being outdoors, especially mowing his lawn, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his three daughters, Kareen (Joseph) Voight of Sandusky, Cheryl (Jonah) Winfield of Lorain and Catherine (John) Hasenflue of Vermilion; five sons, Gary (Elaine) Popke of Sandusky, Charles (Brenda) Popke III of Sanford, N.C., Michael Popke of Monroeville, Kenneth (Patty) Popke of Garner, N.C. and Craig Popke of Mansfield; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister; Barbara Roccosalva of Santa Cruz, CA; one brother, Donald (Carol) Popke of Sandusky; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Including his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen (Meyer) Popke; two sons, Paul and Joseph Popke; three sisters; Virginia Popke, Mary Hotchkiss and Geraldine Shupp; and one brother, Clarence Popke.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 East Perkins Avenue, Sandusky. A prayer service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, January, 22, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
