Charles E. Herzog Jr. 72, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully with family by his side Monday evening, January 19, 2015 at Stein Hospice Care Center.
Charles was born on March 18, 1942 in Sandusky, OH to the late Charles E. and Dorotha M. (Brutcher) Herzog Sr.
Charles was a 1960 graduate from St. Mary's High School and received his bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1964 while serving in the ROTC. He was a Veteran of the Army who proudly served as a captain during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1968. He retired in 1999 as a senior project manager at General Motors after 33 years of service. Charles was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Sandusky Elks 285, American Legion Post 83, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a board member of Sandusky Central Catholic elementary schools and the former Betty Rinderle school. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, coaching his children's sports teams, playing cards, working in the yard, going on family vacations and spending time with his family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife, Mary Jo (Everett) Herzog, whom he married on June 26, 1965. He is also survived by his daughters, Sharon Herzog of Sandusky and Julie (Dennis) Ireland of E. Hampton, CT; sons, Charles Joseph (Carrie) Herzog of Sandusky, Jeff (Debra) Herzog of Huron, Scott Herzog of St. Clair Shores, MI and Bill (Amanda) Herzog of Sandusky; grandchildren, Chaz, Brian, Allison, Jake, Nate, Katie, Morgan, Keith, Ian and Everett; sister, Judy (Jack) Riley of North Charleston, SC; brother, Jim (Linda) Herzog of Sandusky and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Friends may call on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky with Father Joe Steinbauer presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky, OH. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
