Robert P. "Bob" Schnittker, 85, of Sandusky and Kelleys Island, Ohio took off on his last flight, soaring through the clouds to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2015.
He was born on September 28, 1929 on Kelleys Island, Ohio to Charles and Ruth (Lange) Schnittker and was a 1947 graduate of Kelleys Island (Estes) School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving in Germany from 1953-1955 as a medic/pilot. Bob was a pilot since 1947, holding an active pilots license until 2013. He retired from the former Griffing Flying Service, prior to this he worked at the Neuman Boat Lines, Lathrop Construction, New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors and the former Barr Rubber.
Bob was a member of Kelleys Island Zion United Methodist Church, where he had served as a Trustee for over 60 years. He was a member of Kelleys Island Landowners Association, serving on the original committee, Kelleys Island Historical Association, life member of Kelleys Island VFW Post 9908, American Legion Post 83, Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, Maritime Museum of Sandusky and the Erie County Farm Bureau. Bob was also an avid Ohio State fan.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carol Schlesselman whom he married on September 24, 1955 in the Kelleys Island Zion United Methodist Church; three sons, Paul (Jan) Schnittker of Berlin Heights, Dale (Lana) Schnittker and Ronald (Barbara) Schnittker both of Sandusky; grandchildren, Ryan (Erin) Schnittker, Michael (Rebecca) Schnittker, Brandon (Nichole) Schnittker, Kelly (Thomas) Sims, Seth Schnittker, Olivia Schnittker, Octavia Schnittker, Nicholas (Lindsay) Schnittker, Tara (Derek) Tieche, and Tracy (Seth) Link; international students, Beatrice Zhang and Grace Li; great grandchildren, Kennedy, Paige, Gianni, Evan, Grant, John, Rylee and Scarlett; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruth (Lange) Schnittker and grandparents, August and Emilie Schnittker and Fred and Marie Lange.
At Bob's request cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 2-4:00 PM and 6-8:00 PM and on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 10:00 AM until time of Memorial Service celebrating Bob's life at 11:00 AM in the Columbus Avenue United Methodist Church, 2401 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. The Rev. Paul Atkinson will officiate.
