Birdell (Brown) Johnson, 95, Sandusky, went to her heavenly Father�s house early Tuesday morning, April 5, 2011, in the Erie County Care Facility.
Birdell was born on February 14, 1916 in Seneca, SC, the only child of Jeff and Lillian (Gant) Brown. She was employed as a housekeeper and nanny for many area families, and she worked for the Sandusky Board of Education, retiring in 1978. She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, serving on the Missionary Board, Busy Bee Club, and wherever she was needed. In 2010, she was honored as one of the oldest living members of the first Sunday school class. Music was her ministry, and Birdell will be best remembered for her musical contributions to the church, as one of the first pianists, and choir director who established the male chorus and quartet, and the youth choir. She was devoted to her husband, only son, and entire family. Birdell is survived by her granddaughter, Kiya Johnson, Sandusky; grandsons, Pastor Mark (Mary) Johnson, CA, Paul Garnett, Columbus, OH, and Jeffrey Johnson, Jr., Sandusky; special brother-in-law, David (Marcia) Cromer, Beachwood, OH; nephew, Cory Cromer, Columbus, OH; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Johnson; son, Jeffrey Johnson; parents; stepmother, Flossie Brown; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Friends may call on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 10 AM until time of services at 12 Noon at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. Rev. Franklin Churchwell will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH, 44870.
