Alfred V. Schafer, 82, of Monroeville died early Monday morning, March 16, 2015 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky following a brief illness.
He was born November 22, 1932 in Monroeville and was a 1950 graduate of Monroeville High School.
Alfred was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran during the Korean War. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monroeville, Knights of Columbus, St. John Newman Chapter 1117, Holy Name Society, American Legion Post 547, a member of the former Monroeville Kiwanis Club, Monroeville Boosters, where he was a member of the Hall of Fame.
He was a partner of the former Knob Hill Construction Company until 1992. After his retirement he worked a couple years at Janotta and Herner, Monroeville. Alf was very involved with St. Joseph Church, and was an active member in many projects and activities throughout his lifetime. His other hobbies included Sunday dinners with his family, watching sports of all kinds, especially his grandchildren's activities at Monroeville High School.
He is survived by seven children, Linda (Michael) Hohler, Norwalk, Patricia (Robert) Whitacre, Jane (Thomas) Hedrick, Kenneth (Susan) Schafer, David (Jacqueline) Schafer all of Monroeville, Donald (Annette) Schafer, Willard and Thomas (Kirsten) Schafer, Norwalk; 21 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, two sisters, Ann Jones of Monroeville and Theresa Karl of Tiro; two brothers, Norbert Schafer of Norwalk and Robert Schafer of Monroeville; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A. (Gies) Schafer in 2011; two sons, Jerome and Stephen Schafer; parents, Frank and Cecilia (Greenfelder) Schafer and siblings, Mary Moore, Ortrude Smith, and Warren, Edward, Peter and Joseph Schafer.
Friends may call Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 3-8:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville, where the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 2:45 PM Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 19, 2015 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville. Fr. William Pifher will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroeville.
