Rubye Lee "Darling" May

Rubye Lee "Darling" May, 88, of Sandusky, transitioned from this life to a better place, on Sunday, March 15, 2015, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

She was born to Rufe Harris and Lee Girtha [Hundley] Harris in Waynesboro, Mississippi on May 2, 1926.

Rubye attended Waynesboro City Schools in Wayne County as well as Jackson State University, in Jackson, Mississippi. Rubye was forced to drop out her Freshman year due to the fact that they would not let her type. As an only child nothing came easy and she liked having her way.

While in Waynesboro she met and married Charlie May. They moved to Sandusky, OH in 1952 seeking work for her husband and a better life for her children.
She attended the St. Luke MBC in Waynesboro, Mississippi. Rubye and her family joined New Jerusalem MBC in 1963 under the late Fred Tucker. She served as a pastor's aide member and Charityette's member under Pastor Eddy Henry. She also attended Sunday school under Pastor Curtis Johnson. Until her health failed her. Rubye worked at Vogel's/Decko Products for 44 years before retiring.

She loved her family, her church, traveling, shopping at each destination, eating out, gardening, her flowers, and basketball.

She would encourage all with kind words. She pushed her children to be the best they could be. "Pray until something happens... Never give up, we have no quitters, Education is the key to success!" She loved her life! She always stated, "give me my flowers while I am living so I can smell the beauty." "No should'ves, No would'ves, no could'ves." We all got $1.00 dollar for our birthdays.

She leaves to celebrate her life, her husband of 70 years, Charlie May, Sr.; sons, Rufe May of Sandusky, OH, Scott May of Bloomington, IN; daughter, Undraye [Elijah] Hunley of Sandusky, OH; special friend, Ozella Grant, Annie Card, Jewel Conway, Lisa Butcher, Maria Cabrera, and Rev. Murrieta Johnson; special cousins, Bobbie McGill, and Ann Woolard; grandchildren, Sean [Grace] May of Charlotte, NC, Scott May Jr. of Bloomington, IN, Brandon [Sheika] Hunley of Indian Head, MD, Alicia May of Washington D.C., Jackie May of Bowling Green, OH, and Jennifer May of Bowling Green, OH; great- grandchildren, Brian Hunley of Sandusky, OH, Layla May of Charlotte, NC, Keira May of Bloomington, IN, and Cheyenne May of Bowling Green, OH.

Rubye was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Charlie [Infancy], Charles May in 2006; step daughter, Dorothy May in 2012; and granddaughter, Heather Hunley in 2014.

Friends may call on Friday, March 20, 2015, from 6-8 P.M. in the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Eddie Henry Way, Sandusky. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 A.M. in the church. Rev. Curtis L. Johnson, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
