Carol Y. Starkey, 78, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 22, 2015 at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born in West Virginia, and moved to Ohio with her husband, making Norwalk her home since 1959.
Her passion and love for caring for others started at a very young age as she cared for her siblings growing up. Finding her passion in caring for the elderly, she opened the Starkey Nursing Home on West Main Street in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1960. She moved her parents, aunt, and sister, to Norwalk, Ohio, and it became a family endeavor. Carol went on to school to become a nurse, and eventually received her nursing home administrator's license. With the help of her husband, and others, her dream was fulfilled when she built Twilight Gardens Nursing Home in 1977, where she devoted her life to caring for those in need until her retirement and sale of the nursing home in 2002. She will be remembered by her family, by those she cared for, and by the many employees she sent to school to further their education in the health care field.
She endured the loss of her husband, Kermit (Carl) Starkey Jr., her parents, Herbert and Stella Pyatt, her daughters, Brenda Habernigg, and Debbie Case, her sister, Judy Sigley, her granddaughter Coletta E. Starkey, her great grandson, Dustin Witter, and her aunt, Ethel Gibson.
She leaves to forever miss her, sons Kermit (Kim) and wife Cynthia (Beck) Starkey Jr., Kenneth and wife Tracey (Hovater) Starkey, 8 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, her brother, John (Paulette) Pyatt, her nephews, John, Eric, and Jason, and their children.
Friends may call on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, from 6: 00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, where funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Rev. Fred Wiechers will officiate.
